For people who have experienced trauma, either as adults
or in childhood, life can become very difficult indeed. Sometimes the
associated thoughts and feelings become as if ‘frozen in time’,
and it can feel as though a difficult, traumatic or distressing experience
is still happening. The experience cannot be resolved properly because
the feelings are too intense. I offer a comprehansive
package of up-to-date trauma treatment, including EMDR and Sensorimotor
Trauma therapy. Both Sensorimotor Trauma therapy and EMDR
help in processing the event, moving to a more adaptive position – from
re-experiencing to remembering. I am trained to work with these
problems, and have much experience in this area.
EMDR is a treatment which can be effective in helping
with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and other problems such as anxiety,
phobias and panic
attacks. EMDR has been the subject of a great deal of clinical research
which has demonstrated the changes that can take place. It is recommended
by Nice (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) for PTSD. EMDR is
widely used in NHS specialist services.
Less well known in the UK, but rapidly gaining popularity,
Sensorimotor Trauma therapy is a gentle and optimisitic way of working
with trauma and related problems, which clients generally respond to
very well. Rather than focus on the painful symptoms of the trauma,
the client is supported and encouraged to develop ways of understanding
their
competance
and ability to recover a sense of power.
A combination of EMDR and Sensorimotor Trauma therapy
can help remove the blocks to natural healing and recovery. A period
of
stabilisation
is
necessary,
and
it is
sometimes possible
for treatment
take place in a few sessions when there has been a single trauma. With
long term abuse or multiple trauma treatment will be longer, although
it is always impossible to predict how long treatment will take. I will
usually interweave Sensorimotor approaches and EMDR with regular psychotherapy,
keeping in mind the natural pace of each individual I work with.
