My values and ethics
I am a registered member of UKCP (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy).
I am also a member of Metanoia Institute in London, where I trained,
and of GPTI (Gestalt Psychotherapy and Training Institute) whose Code
of Ethics I subscribe to.
My work is supported by regular clinical supervision with a senior therapist.
I have additional specialist supervision for working with young people
and for my EMDR work.
Underpinning my work is my strong sense of compassion, and my desire
for people to have the best of opportunities. Alongside my sensitivity
and attentiveness towards individual difficulties, a high degree of professionalism
is central to my practice.
More about me and my work
In addition to my private practice
I worked for over a decade with young people, the last six years
of which I was Co-ordinator
of a young peoples’ counselling
service. I now work freelance as a Consultant Therapist in a specialist
Independant Trauma Service, and as a clinical supervisior in various
settings. I maintain an active interest in current trends in psychotherapy,
attending conferences
and workshops of specialist interest. This gives me the ability to work
at the leading edge of the profession. I combine my extensive knowledge
and experience in the service of best practice. I have presented conference
workshops. I enjoy the challenge of writing academic papers about my
practice of therapy. I am currently in my third and final year as an
assitant tutor at Metanoia Institute in London, where I trained.
My previous experience
Originally trained as a teacher (one who never taught!), I worked for
many years as a personal development trainer in adult education and with
community groups. I often worked with mental health projects, women’s
refuges, and family centres, among others. I encountered life stories
which challenged me, but which also fascinated me. I realised that some
insight into counselling would be the best way of developing my skills
and confidence. Once qualified, I used my training skills to train counsellors.
Alongside all this, I did development work for projects involving older
people, people with learning difficulties, and those with mental health
problems. My training as a psychotherapist was an obvious development
from this.
Living Gestalt
For me, the discipline of Gestalt extends beyond my
working life into my personal life and relationships. If it’s a
good way to practice it’s also a good a way to live! I too need
time to be just in the here and now, mainly through my routine practice
of Mindfulness. I refresh
myself by spending time in the countryside, in which I live and regularly
walk. In addition I enjoy reading and keenly follow my interests
in art and music.
