What is psychotherapy?
Everyone needs to be able to tell their story, and this
is especially true at times of change, loss or stress. A key aspect of therapy
is the opportunity
to be heard and understood by a trained professional, and this can help to
make sense of bewildering feelings or stuck patterns of behaviour.
Psychotherapy is about helping people bear difficult feelings
or experiences. With the right support, most things can be easier to bear.
Feeling understood
and developing self awareness are great building blocks for managing life
better. Psychotherapy is about exploring
the things that make life difficult, mainly through talking, but also sometimes
through use of creative techniques or mindful awareness. The approach I use
also takes into account any physical symptoms which may be relevant, treating
the mind and body as a whole.
An underlying principle of my work is my belief in the human capacity to
grow and recover from even extensive and enduring difficulties and life experience.
Psychotherapy and counselling
I can offer to work with individuals and couples, and may suggest starting
with some brief term work. This can be enough to promote immediate targeted
changes. I also enjoy working long-term, where deeper healing may be needed
to produce sustained benefits. I have many years experience of working with
adolescents and young people, and work with them and their families to help
them through this difficult stage of life.
Trauma Therapy
I am trained in up to date approaches for working with
trauama and related difficulties, and have considerable experience in working
with many different types of trauma. These approaches include EMDR and
Sensorimotor Trauma therapy. I work part time as a consultant trauma therapist
in an independant
trauma service and have experience of medico-legal report writing and
of insurance work. The initial focus of this work is to help find
ways of taking the edge off feelings that may threaten to overwhelm,
before working directly with the trauma.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness means bringing the present moment into full
awareness. Many people live either in the past or with their attention on
planning or anticipating the future. Mindfulness helps to bring a sense
of aliveness to the present moment, with feelings of calm attention rather
than relaxation. It is a very simple technique, which can have remarkable
benefits
for people
experiencing
stress
or worry.
It
is a
key
part of Sensorimotor
therapy,
and helps many people to manage their feelings more successfully.
How much does it cost?
I charge £40.00 for fifty minute sessions. Longer
sessions, for Trauma work, are charged pro rata. I have a limited number
of low cost places available,
these apply in some circumstances.
